Is it *always* safe to add --with-sysroot , no matter what your host
distro?  (My host is LFS-6.8 .)

Since current LFS builds a HOSTED TARGET, DT_NEEDED are only searched via -rpath-link and SEARCH_DIR after using sysroot during binutils pass2. Sysroot has been available since gcc 3.3.3, as I recall. You will be okay.
