FYI, I have checked permissions on fixdep and it's set for 660. I tried 
adding x to the list, but got the same error.  Upon checking again it had 
reset to 660.

I also looked at /bin/sh (which links to /bin/bash -> /tools/bin/bash), it's 
permissions were 755, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.
