 From memory, the change happened somewhere around 2.6.25 to 2.6.27
[ 2.6.24 was hda, I spent far too long using that on my home server
because of issues specific to a PCI card with extra IDE drives ], so
sometime in 2008.  In other words, almost everyone will have a host
system which already uses sd instead of hd.
