FWIIW:

I am building a system quite similar to LFS:

When I started to use qemu-kvm I ran into a bootstrap problem.
Sorry, but I do not remember the exact circumstances or error messages.

But the solution was to run qemu-kvm with:
qemu-system-x86_64 -cpu SandyBridge [...]
(My host is also SandyBridge)

Since then, I have had no problems at all building/bootstrapping in the 
qemu-kvm VM.
