The hardware is a virtualized AMD-8150 (4 core) 4gb mem running under 
Virtualbox.

After searching both the GMP and LFS archives, I can find no relevant 
matches.  Which kind of bug would be more likely - GMP-related or 
LFS-related?

Any clues at all?
