I really suggest getting a bigger drive.  I got a 16G thumb drive last 
week for $5 at retail.

We did write that the minimal size needed is 2.8G, but that was some 
time ago and things have grown a bit since then.

You could try stripping the libraries and deleting the /usr/lib/*.la files.
