It took me four or five attempts to get GCC to build, but my problem was at pass 2. At one attempt I even copied and pasted the whole instruction set and it still failed at the same point that you've found.
Bruce suggested wrapping the commands in a script so you can see what's happening, and that seems like a good idea, however I had already built it by then by doing nothing different -- just trying it yet again. I'd still be interested to know why we build GMP, MPC, and MPFR inside GCC except on the final build where they are built separately. Richard
