There is no logical error in the book ; you have, as said by Tonny, to follow the book. In chapter 5, you should be in $LFS/sources ; in this directory, you should havec downloaded the sources ; then untar the right package with : tar -xvf the_right_package.gz|bz2 cd the_right_package and then execute the commands VERBATIM. When the package is built, come back into $LFS/sources (generally with "cd ..") and the delete the directory the_right_package and for gcc, binutil, etc. delete the_right_package-build directory.
