I figured out the problem. The most recent, updated hint is from October 2007 (v 1.4). However, the helpers archive on the LFS Hints site dates from February 2007 and does not have the ldconfig.c helper. Matthias sent me the most recent helpers archive to go with the updated hint. I'm going to send it to Bruce Dubbs and see if he can upload replace the archive on the site with the correct version.
