You can't save your work on the DVD.
If you mount a partition of your hard drive at /mnt/lfs then you can
write files there. If you unmount it cleanly the data will persist and
can be remounted next time you boot

Don't know. The lfs cd has never worked on any of my computers. Just
use Ubuntu or Fedora or something that more people use and that work on
many different computers.
