I'm out to sea here. Worked through 6.8 build without error (it would seem).
However, attempt to boot yields (in part):

<<<<<<
scanned 0 and added 0 devices
autorun ...
... autorun DONE.
Root-NFS: no NFS server address
VFS: unable to mount root fs via NFS, trying floppy.
VFS: Cannot open root device "sdb5" or unknown block(2,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
Ob00 1048575 sr0 driver: sr
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block(2,0)
 >>>>

/dev/sdb5 is proper device ... all lfs files in place.

Following this failure to re-boot, I re-enter the build environment this way:
export LFS=/mnt/lfs
sudo chroot "$LFS" /usr/bin/env -i \
 > HOME=/root TERM="$TERM" PS1='\u:\w\$ ' \
 > PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin \
 > /bin/bash --login

then ...
$grub-mkdevicemap --device-map=device.map
$cat device.map ...

file device.map is empty!

Suggestions help chastisement appreciated.
