Most likely a 'helpful' email program. The extra spaces are a novelty, but I know Outlook is a terrible offender when it comes to capitalising sentences for you, and for replacing paired dashes with em-dash (which then gets converted to a single-dash for ASCII encoding). Maybe it's useful for business use, but it's awful for technical content.
