 As you may have spotted, I loathe Python, but the gnome
developers disagree, so I have to live with it - but I'm not the
best person to offer advice and diagnostics on it.

 What I will say is that I build the following packages that are
mentioned on the Python page of BLFS in this order (and not
necessarily the same versions as are currently in the book).

openssl
Berkeleydb
Python
(in my scripts, sqlite is built much later)

I suspect that you either did something unusual in your
openssl build, or that you are doing something else
unusual, such as not putting everything in /usr - there
is nothing wrong with using multiple prefixes, but it
certainly can make things harder.
