This should be 2.6.18 or later.

This should be version 4.8 or later

You didn't say what version of the book you are using, but I assume LFS-6.5. 
You are using an old version of Red Hat RHEL4, but it looks like some of the 
file shave been updated.  Linux 2.6.9 was released in 2004.  I'd suggest doing 
a 
manual update of the kernel and rebooting, but the most likely problem is 
either 
an error in following the instructions or adding some kind of optimization.
