Hi Loenard,

Have you looked at the *jhalfs* scripts 
(http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/alfs/)? It is pure bash but it does the 
whole thing from getting the LFS book, extracting all the commands, 
downloading the sources (if you don't have them already) and building 
the book.

It might not be exactly what you want but maybe you could use the ideas 
to make your perl script better?

Just a thought.
