There is an important message in the Chapter 5 Introduction: Before issuing the build instructions for a package, the package should be unpacked as user lfs, and a cd into the created directory should be performed. The build instructions assume that the bash shell is in use. As for the '.' and '..' you can try playing around. Try, ls .. ls . It will be easier to unpack everything from within the sources directory. This will make it possible to follow the book exactly ie. cut and paste. It doesn't really matter though, you can adjust the books commands.
