I have no idea. I've never messed with anything other than 4.0.15.
LFS SVN uses 4.0.17, so it must be fairly stable.

Well, again, I can't help you on "for sure" basis, but I think
you'd probably be alright. I use a package management system,
and since I can remember, when I install the Shadow package
in BLFS (after Linux-PAM), there are no new binaries so that
tells me it does a clean overwrite from the LFS installation
(without Linux-PAM).

None really that I can think of. Except perhaps the possibility
that you could totally lock yourself out of the system - forever.
