Actually, no. I cannot speak for GNOME-2.16.x. I do know that there
are significant changes to both the GNOME packages that need to be
installed and the support packages used (gtk+, etc.).

Additionally, the BLFS book doesn't put *all* GNOME packages into
/opt. For example, even in an /opt installation, the GNOME Icon
Theme package should be installed in /usr.

You are sort of on-your-own with 2.16. Hopefully, someone can jump
in and help out.
