Here's a wonderful snippet from the latest release of cdrtools

So, another case of NIH syndrome. Rather than report bugs/offer patches to existing projects (tar vs. star, make vs. smake, etc.) he goes and reinvents the wheel. Oh well, I guess it's his time to waste :-)
Ha, I'm sure I'm not the only one that's going to spot the obvious double standards in the above post :-) My justification is that trying to communicate with Mr Schilling has proved quite trying for a lot of those who have tried, so getting patches applied upstream is either impossible or at least very time consuming and tiring. Add to that the fact that the recent relicensing of bits of cdrtools means that providing it may be problematic for GNU/Linux distributors (more info on this is in Debian's announcement of the fork, a copy of which is at http://lwn.net/Articles/198171/). Like I said before though, whether or not maintaining a fork (with all its hacks, Linux incomatibilities/workarounds, etc.) or starting a new project is more economical remains to be seen.
