Ah, I didn't understand you were running on top of that pile of^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hother OS. You probably need earlier bootscripts as well - I'm guessing the lfs-bootscripts-20051223 tarball might fit the bill, if you can find it, plus something like udev-071 and hotplug-2004_09_23. Ideally, pick a version of the book from early January to see how hotplug, udev, and those bootscripts get handled.
