I think I restarted my LFS build four.. maybe five times. Almost all of my build issues came from skimming the secrions too quickly and either: executing a code block that I shouldn't have (tests I didn't need or commands that didn't apply to my system), or not executing something that was mentioned in text outside of a code block. One other thing that was slightly confusing were the one or two occasions LFS refers outside of its scope. For example- directing DHCP users to BFLS... For someone initially struggling with LFS to jump into a middle chaper of BLFS, it felt a bit daunting (my biggest concern was wondering if I was missing some configuation prerequisite prior to that BLFS section).
Pretty much everything I needed was in the LFS book. Doing a google seach like: "site:linuxfromscratch.org error message here" helped a lot too. My last full run through was a complete success using the LiveCD and Development LFS book (back in Jan or Feb) with deviations for the newest versions of most software packages. Something which I like in the BLFS book that might be useful with LFS is the section of links to the source and patches displayed in the same section as the build instructions. With LFS I found the download-as-I-go method helped me keep track of where I was if I had to reboot my system, but having to keep referring back to chapter 3 for the links was a bit annoying.
