Passwd shows the line "Changing password for root", but doesn't
prompt for the password.
What can I do to solve this issue?
I've seen something like this on an earlier version of shadow,
although for me 4.0.14 worked ok. The lock file(s) are the problem,
they prevent any attempt to rerun until the current run has finished -
just delete them.
Are you using 4.0.14, as in the current book, or an older version ?
Shadow-4.0.15 has now been released - this should fix the 'su -c'
problem in 4.0.14, so after removing the lock file please try this
newer version - AFAIK the same instructions will work although I
haven't tested the released version, only a snapshot.

It didn't solve either. I will try to build the 4.0.9 version, since
this is the one the stable book uses. And the pwconv program just create
the locks and then aborts. I can delete them, rerun pwconv and it will
just recreate them and abort again.
