No, the editors were just being cautious. If you're interested, try Alexander Patrakov's UTF-8 version of the LFS book http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~alexander/lfs-book/
Unfortunatly I always use French, English, Deutsch and sometimes Russian, so have an unicode support is important for me.
