Wouldn't it make more sense to use current svn? Binutils-2.16.1 doesn't
need flex installed on the host

I thought of suggesting that, but I wonder if a new lfs user would want
to build a less-stable system, not to mention that there is still a
little bit of controversy over whether lfs switched to gcc4 too quickly,
and whether the potential problems of that system outweigh the small
amount to time to simply install flex and bison on the host. I will
continue to use the development branch, with gcc4, but I personally
don't want to recommend it (in its current state anyway) to a new user.
