OK, so it's obviously there. Perhaps it's linked to something in /tools that is no longer there (you're very courageous to have removed it already!). What do `ldd /usr/bin/ld', `readelf -l /usr/bin/ld | grep interpreter' and `ld --version' show?
Does cleaning out the linux kernel source directory and re-extracting the tarball help at all?
