I don't like to disencourage you, but I have had very much the same problems. 
Trying to solve them, I got more and more in troubles. At the final, I had to 
reformat the partition and reinstall LFS 6, but _without_  pam and most of 
the security issues. We have a little intranet with three boxes 
interconnected and connected to Internet through a router. I dont know if I 
am a little too careless, but I think, in such a close shop I dont need soo 
much security. And it is my feeling, that security issues, as necessary they 
might be, are creating a lot of additional problems in the day by day use of 
linux, at least in an home environment. I would like to exchange oppinions on 
this issue also.
