Sites like github, bitbucket, code.google.com or gitorious all offer free hosting and nice webui's for people to more easily provide patches. It eases the git learning curve for people, it reduces bandwidth usage on your server and it lowers the bar to participation.
Running your own git server is an interesting project. But the reality is that you really don't need to and w/o a lot of work you're not going to beat the usability of the servers I mentioned.
