Yep it can be changed. It's an Apache config not XML in this case (the 
dir listings are shown when no index.html or index.php files are 
present). It can be turned off but have to see if it can be nicely done 
on a case by case basis. In other areas on the server those directory 
listings are a lot longer and some form of sorting might be desired 
(although I doubt it, it bears investigation). In the link I mentioned 
in my original email, there is no use for alternate orders. I just used 
it as an example. There are other areas (such as in 
archives.linuxfromscratch.org) where it makes a difference.

Nothing beats a nicely rendered HTML page. It's just convenient to dump 
in new files and not have to worry about updating HTML files after the fact.

All this will be a moot point before this month (January) is out. Later 
today I will try an experiment to reconfigure Apache to turn off the 
sorting headers and allow wget again and monitor usage and make a final 
determination.
