So, I've had a look over the current glibc svn for the 2.16 branch and
found this:

Looks like it is indeed a bug.
*shrug*
Bruce: I'm aware it's not our job to find and fix every bug in each
package we use, but as it was such an intense debate on this particular
matter, I figured it needed stating if nothing else for closure.
