This whole popt / pkg-config discussion is ringing bells for me.  Wasn't
this something we figured out last time we were looking into the
pkg-config testsuite?  There was a bug in the popt version that
pkg-config included, I thought.  Let me see if I can find the lfs-dev
thread...
