Alright, I grabbed the iso above from Fedora's site, started it up in a vm, ran 'yum install gcc patch texinfo bison subversion wget -y', grabbed jhalfs trunk, set it up to build the book with my additions... ...and built gcc pass1 without the patch and without any issues. I'm not sure what you're doing differently, but I can't replicate.
