Lets say that the work is front loaded. However, the maintenance after installation, at least for dedicated servers, is quite a bit less. For instance, if you are not using Python, then there is no need to pay attention to Python. You can build a very solid LAMP server with only about 10-15 packages beyond LFS. I can probably build an entire system with 2-3 hours 'attention time' and I know exactly what I have. Anduin was up for almost 3 years without a reboot until another admin accidentally rebooted it with an ISP tool.
