I think it's only practical to update packages to the latest version and then fix any breakage created as it comes to light. In this case Firefox, Thunderbird and the Gimp are fine with the current patches. Seamonkey doesn't need patching. I don't install Qt so I can't comment there. The only thing that I had to fix for libpng-1.5.7 was inkscape which isn't in the book. (Phew!
