Nice investigation! There's another Glibc bug mentioned at http://wiki.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/ticket/2912. Might be worth merging the 2 into a 'fixes' patch and getting that in the book. That bug in #2912 seems pretty unlikely to be hit, but if we're going to be patching Glibc anyway for the slightly bigger issue of Firefox crashing, then we may as well get that fix in there as well.
