With certain kernel configurations that are fairly rare, the Version_ 
symbol can be generated when building the kernel.  This would generate 
the old behavior making System.map relevant.

That's a hard question to answer.  I can't recall the last oops that I 
saw.  However, from what I've read, the kernel handles the issue now.
