Probably not the best comparison, in hindsight. Upon investigation,
Gentoo's baselayout package is considerably more exotic than that, and
includes many more files such as package-independent rc-scripts - hence
it's periodic version-bumps when enhancements are made...

The contents of DJ's proposed bundle, however, is unlikely to need
updating as far as i can see, and so i don't think it needs to be
PM-aware, as it's a one-time install - the purpose of PM is, after
all, to manage package-updates.

I still think building packages in chapter-6's chroot as an
unprivileged user ought to be encouraged, though - it may be
unnecessary, but it would engender good habits to be carried over to
BLFS and similar projects, plus it would be compatible with any of the
PM systems i have knowledge of. It would need (a crippled, non-setuid)
'su' installed in chapter-5, i imagine, to change from root to the
package-builder's id - what else..?
