I was reading the distro specific support on linuxquestions.org for lfs, someone posted the following: " earlier i could not create binutils-build directory using d command given in book as lfs user. i did it by changing to root n made $LFS/binutils-build the working directory for binutils n proceeded " seems that in Chapter 4 the book should have it so users make a separate directory to unpack the sources and work from [ better option ] or chown $LFS to lfs [ not preferred ]
it is obvious that the person posting their question doesn't really understand the ownership and permissions of linux, or he would have understood why he ran into the issue and resolved it better than he did.
