I'll have to check on the more recent versions. I know that 1.9.2 (the 
last time I tried) still needed a 32bit glibc. I don't have a pure64 
build around but I think the new one (1.9.5) may work. grub2 is a 
completely different beast then grub legacy. Still no documentation.
