I seem to remember when I had a laptop that I used a pcmcia network card with that it mapped to a pci slot also. I know it seems odd for the bus to map that way, but it did. It also used the hotplug system, for pulling the nic out without having to shut the system down, if you needed to swap pcmcia devices. I suspect that is was a USB pci device if the links are traced down completely. I don't have a laptop to check that with any more.
