Yes. Typically, one would contribute for a while to the development
and support mailing lists and also submit patches (patching the
actual book's XML) to fix bugs in the Trac system. This would
showcase your skill in literary prowess and technical ability.

After you've somewhat become a solid community member, and done
the stuff mentioned above, it is usually just a matter of asking
the lead Editor of the book if there are any openings.
