I'd certainly like to take a stab at it, yes. What I'm proposing to do is tackle it in 3 steps:

1) Simple version bump - as mentioned, I think our current rules will spit out warnings, but they'll still work so a quick upgrade should be easy enough 2) Upgrade the rules to remove the warnings caused by the upgrade. As you mention, I believe these should be achievable via sed's. 3) Implement the dynamic rule generator for things like network interfaces and optical devices. I'll probably need more of a hand on this bit, as I've only one DVD writer and one network card so testing is going to be a little difficult :-)
