Well, there are only two packages to get KDE up and running (plus aRts as well, but that is an audio server), a lib package and a base apps package. So the functionality for HAL is likely in the base package (libs doesn't link to the HAL/D-bus libs). From the innards of KDE you could find out which 'app' of the gazillion in that package actually interact with HAL. I look at it like this. Install HAL IAW BLFS Install aRts, KDE libs and KDE base apps (with all depends, of course) Everything "just works". And works really good.
