I don't know what they are intended to do. No bugs have been reported against the rules in the udev_update branch regarding devices not showing up correctly (aside from this CDROM symlink one). If someone knows of a particular device that isn't handled correctly then put it in trac or email lfs-dev with it and I (or someone else) will fix the rules up - very quickly if a known-good rule is provided with the report.
