Aha! On thinking about it, of course, you are right. I suspect my
fonts, since my LANG=en_GB.iso88591. Also note: I'm using
Sylpheed-claws, not the usual Mozilla bloatware.
Try installing DejaVu fonts from http://dejavu.sf.net/ into your old
system, and replace all occurrences of "Bitstream Vera" with "DejaVu" in
/etc/fonts/fonts.conf (see
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3322). Or, if you don't
care about proprietary stuff, just install Microsoft fonts.
