Well, I'll hold my hands up on the unusual nature of the merge. I stated to Alexander on at least one occasion that I'd provide him with a branch to play with, and we'd merge from there if it looked promising. My inaction on doing that simple task lead to Alexander working on producing a patch off his own back. It went through a series of revisions based on feedback from members of this list, then Jeremy applied the patch when he felt it looked suitable to do so.
