Thanks, Miguel. The USB stuff was my biggest concern. I just don't
know about any kernel modules required as I don't have a USB scanner
so cannot test it.

I must say though, I find it odd that your USB scanner requires
libieee1284, a library used to find devices attached to the parallel
port.
