FC4 has had problems because they use a patched up gcc-4, but I think using the latest release from any of the major distros would be fine. I always used FC3, but the whole point of Ch. 5 is that you are bootstrapping a clean toolchain while separating from the host. Ideally, it should build from any modern host within reason (no goofy distros). Someone should really try to get to the bottom of the FC4 issues. Now, if you plan on using the distro and not just for LFS building, then that's another thing. I've never been big on jumping around distros. In fact, the only one of I ever used was RedHat/FC before I found the light and just built the damn thing myself. I'm sure you can find great things said about any of them. Debian stable is a very safe way to go, I think. Ubuntu is a derivative of debian, and I often hear really great things about it. I know less about Mandrake and Slackware. All I know about Knoppix is that they have a nice Live CD. For the purposes of bootstrapping LFS, I think any of the ones you listed would be fine. If you want a throw away distro, download the LFS Live CD. I just checked it out for the first time, and it looks very nice.
