It should be noted that LD_PRELOAD can be used to accomplish some nasty things and as such certain security enhanced patches will not allow the use of this variable at all. IOW, it's probably not best to use LD_PRELOAD as a workaround when the problem is known and fixed upstream. I will be running some tests.
