I'm not on my LFS box right now, but when I configure readline here with that line, it comes out right. In Makefile.in, it says it installs libreadline.a and libhistory.a to $(libdir): $(INSTALL_DATA) libreadline.a $(DESTDIR)$(libdir)/libreadline.a And $(libdir) is set by --libdir=. I just checked and it did it. I got all the libraries in $(DESTDIR)/lib. Maybe you didn't set --libdir to what you thought you did.
