I can't speak for Randy, but I've found it helpful many times when doing support (not lfs-support, though). Someone will be wondering how to do something, I'll say "well you can just run $random_executable", and they'll say "I don't have it; where did you get it from?". At that point, it's much easier to ask whatever package management scheme I have, than it is to remember everything. (Some executables are easy -- python, for instance -- but not all are.)
